Late Rembrandt exhibition

The Rijksmuseum presented in 2015 the first major retrospective of the later work of Rembrandt van Rijn.

This was the first time that an exhibition had been dedicated to the late work of one of the greatest painters who ever lived: Rembrandt. Over 100 of the paintings, drawings and prints that Rembrandt produced in the final phase of his life were showed, brought to you from museums and private collections across the globe.

This one-off event took place from 12 February to 17 May.

Activities for young and old

To accompany its ‘Late Rembrandt’ exhibition, the Rijksmuseum organized a wide range of workshops, lectures and courses for all age groups. These activities included a series of four lectures, also entitled ‘Late Rembrandt’, given by conservators of the Rijksmuseum. In a specially organized workshop, called ‘Ruw schilderen met Rembrandt, children could learn to paint in the ‘rough‘ style used by Rembrandt.

The exhibition was viewed by more than half a million visitors, a record number for the Rijksmuseum. The popularity of the exhibition was reflected not only in the visitor numbers, but also in the widespread, unanimous acclaim by the media, both within and outside the Netherlands.

The Late Rembrandt exhibition was made possible by Stichting Ammodo and the Gieskes-Strijbis Fonds.
