Technical research sheds new light on the work of Pieter de Hooch

In collaboration with the Museum Prinsenhof Delft, the Rijksmuseum has conducted the first ever extensive technical research into the work of Pieter de Hooch (1629-in or after 1679).
Operation Night Watch to start at the Rijksmuseum

On 8 July 2019 the Rijksmuseum starts Operation Night Watch. It will be the biggest and most wide-ranging research and conservation project in the history of Rembrandt’s masterpiece. The goal of Operation Night Watch is the long-term preservation of the painting.

In collaboration with the Museum Prinsenhof Delft, the Rijksmuseum has conducted the first ever extensive technical research into the work of Pieter de Hooch (1629-in or after 1679), in the run-up to the 'Pieter de Hooch in Delft: From the shadow of Vermeer' exhibition at the Museum Prinsenhof Delft (11 October 2019 through 16 February 2020). This study has deepened our understanding of Pieter de Hooch’s working method, his search for the right composition, his growth as an artist, and his palette.

693 artists open their own exhibition at the Rijksmuseum

Today, on the anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth, 693 artists will open their own exhibition at the Rijksmuseum: Long Live Rembrandt. Hundreds of artists – from primary school children to established artist, and from financial controllers to cabinetmakers – are paying homage to the great master in the museum’s summer exhibition. The artworks on display include 96 versions of The Night Watch, 253 artworks by children, and 132 copies of Rembrandt’s self-portraits. Long Live Rembrandt runs until 15 September 2019 in the Philips Wing of the Rijksmuseum.
Rijksmuseum invites everyone to make art for the summer exhibition

The Rijksmuseum is issuing an open invitation to everyone who wants to take part in its major summer exhibition – inspired by Rembrandt. Amateurs or professional artists, no matter what their age, are welcome to submit a self-made artwork. The Rijksmuseum is looking forward to showing hundreds of artworks at the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition, which will have its grand opening on 15 July 2019, Rembrandt’s birthday.
