Der Narr, Erich Heckel, 1917
The fifth and final Bauhaus portfolio is entirely dedicated to depictions of people. Erich Heckel carved Der Narr (The Fool) during the First World War (1914–18) while working as a medical orderly on the Flemish front. The clothing of this ‘fool’ suggests that he is a soldier. Heckel had previously portrayed two soldiers in similar uniforms.
