Die Ringer (The Wrestlers), Max Beckmann, 1921
Two men are wrestling as they roll across the floor. They are not in a ring, but on the stage of a theatre, along with a referee and three men at a café table. People watch gleefully from their theatre boxes. The conductor in the orchestra pit provides the musical accompaniment. In this print Beckmann conveys his rather gloomy, melancholic vision of German society.
