Mythological stories

'Mythology’ comes from the Greek word muthos, which means ‘the spoken word’ or ‘story’. A myth is a tale about gods and demigods, and the body of these stories is known as mythology. In principle, every culture has its own mythology. However, when people refer to it they usually mean the stories from classical antiquity featuring the Greek and Roman gods. These deities live on Mount Olympus, unreachable for mere mortals, from where they interfere with life on earth on a grand scale.The supreme god Zeus (Jupiter for the Romans) sired various children with mortal women. Ever since the Renaissance, classical mythology has largely determined the content of Western art and literature. The tales of love and war between the gods themselves and between the gods and humans appealed to the imagination and recur frequently in the visual and applied arts.
