Van Lelyveld travelled as the governor’s assistant to the farthest corners of the country and took photographs for his album. As an amateur and documentary photographer he was well ahead of his time. This 19th-century street view of the Waterkant is very modern. It features all of the elements that would make 20th-century photography so arresting: dynamism, coincidence, and a remarkable liveliness.
