Van Lelyveld takes these photographs for his article on the clothing of Hindustani women. Both women wear a mohar málá, a necklace made of coins. The children also wear jewellery. The jewels represent the women’s capital and afford insight into their position within the Hindustani community. In Suriname many women transcend the caste they originally had in India.
