Van Lelyveld left for Suriname as a 28-year old to work as the assistant to the Dutch governor Titus van Asch van Wijck. This presented him with every opportunity to photograph all of the layers of the Surinamese society in the farthest nooks and crannies. Like a seasoned photojournalist he recorded all of the districts of Paramaribo, celebrations on queen’s birthday, population groups and the work camps of the Javanese contract labourers.
