Hindustani Store in Paramaribo, Théodore van Lelyveld, 1895 - 1898
Not far from the depot, on Watermolenstraat is a store catering specifically to the Indian migrants. Cooking pots and fabrics from India are sold there. The store owners are probably ‘free Hindustanis,’ men who had made an independent living in Suriname after their contract expired. The woman in the doorway hides her face. Because of the prevailing gender roles, women often stay indoors.
