Sunbirds (Nectariniidae), Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, 1596 - 1610
brush, h 260mm × w 150mm More details
De Boodt probably compiled his ‘three large volumes’ as follows: one for plants, one for animals and one for birds. The bird album was damaged at some point and the drawings were bound again in the 19th century. The owner at the time, Van Huerne, also commissioned surroundings and background to be added to some of the drawings. The artist Jacob Goethals, for example, gave these sunbirds a branch to perch on.
