Explanatory note

Carnaval is een driedaags katholiek feest dat uitbundig in de zuidelijke, vanouds katholieke provincies wordt gevierd, hoewel dit ook steeds vaker boven de rivieren gebeurt. Carnaval begint op een zondag. Het hoogtepunt is op dinsdag, Vastenavond. De dag erna, Aswoensdag is de eerste dag van de veertig dagen tot Pasen. Oorspronkelijk werd in deze dagen licht gevast.
