Frame model of the port half of a stern, cut off at the waterline, demonstrating the steering gear.
The stern is elliptical and shows three decks, indicated by their framing only. The upper deck is open. It has a large cross-shaped well for the screw between sternpost and rudder post. Just forward of the well on the upper deck, the barrel of a steering wheel is placed. The steering gear, just below the upper deck, is a mixture of a Rapson slide and sweep. The lower tiller, which is operated by the steering gear, is cranked so it can move in the space between the well of the screw and the port side of the ship; it is not attached to the shaft of the rudder directly, but turns on an axle slightly forward of the shaft and the movement is transmitted to the shaft by means of hinges. Between rails that span the well of the screw to the side of the ship, a plate with a brace fixed loosely around the tiller goes forward and backwards, driven by the wheel rope going over two sheaves on top of the plate. It allows for the tiller to follow the movement of the brace, without interfering with the arciform movement of the tiller. The tension of the wheel rope can be regulated by means of a turnbuckle. The rudder is of the same type as model NG-MC-1064. The upper tiller is missing.
At the Werkmanstentoonstelling in The Hague in 1876, Adriaan Rosel obtained a Silver Medal for his models. This model was mentioned. It represents the steering gear of the 51-gun steam frigate Adolf Hertog van Nassau (72 metres long, built in Flushing, active from 1858 to 1914).1
Scale (on model) 1:20.
