Applied Arts
Salt cellars, tablecloths, stove plates, keys, flower vases, a porcelain monkey; these objects too have a place – perhaps somewhat surprisingly – in the Rijksmuseum’s collection. Categorized under the heading ‘applied arts’ is applied art made of metal (except for jewels and watches), glass, ceramic and textile (except for clothing). Their number is close to 15,000.
Some of these objects were used in households in previous centuries and provide insight into the lives of our ancestors. Others have a more decorative function and served as showpieces in the houses or palaces of princes, noblemen and wealthy burghers, and in churches. The Rijksmuseum has a treasure trove of applied arts!
