An artist can learn composition and light by copying this masterpiece. Reed pen and brown ink, with brown wash and opaque white; later additions in greyish-mauve wash; framing line in brown ink, h 171mm × w 255mm Rembrandt drew this little house on the Spaarndammerdijk during one of his walks around Amsterdam. The drawing served as the starting point for the 1648 etching. There are a number of differences between the drawing and the print. The etching is much smaller, the trees have a completely different shape, and Rembrandt added various objects to it, such as a horse’s skull.

In many cases, the location is easy to recognize. These cottages stood southwest of Amsterdam along the Schinkelweg. In fact, he was not overly concerned about topographical accuracy. The houses behind the first cottage are a rather free interpretation of the actual buildings.
