Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis), Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, 1596 - 1610
Natural science changed dramatically at the end of the 16th century: ancient treatises on the study of nature were rediscovered and supplemented with insights derived from personal observations. This new knowledge was conveyed in illustrated books. De Boodt, too, took a precise and encyclopaedic approach. He included a dorsal as well as a ventral view of this sand lizard.
