Jan Cock Blomhoff, the new director of the Deshima trading colony, arrived there in 1817. Against all rules, he also brought his family with him: his wife Titia (right), their infant son Johannes, the wet nurse Petronella and the enslaved servant Maraty. They were a sight to behold, and became the subject of paintings that served as examples for prints long afterwards. Unfortunately, the women and child had to pack up and return to Batavia (now Jakarta).
