‘Morning Mist by the Western Ridge’, Matteo Ripa, after Shen Yu, 1712 - 1714
While experimenting with copperplate engraving, Ripa faced various challenges. These included sourcing suitable raw materials for the ink, mastering the printing press, and adapting the Chinese imagery of the woodcuts into the European medium of engraving. Here, he blended his European perspective into the Chinese model in his portrayal of the sun and clouds.
