In feest Van der Elsken frequently spread a single photograph over two pages, and equally often juxtaposed two different photographs on a double page. These combinations tend to be full of dynamism and vivacity. Even (or precisely?) when the two photographs are almost identical, such as those of the Book Ball of 1961, they reinforce each other and the movement jumps off the pages.
