Small bags are increasingly carried by men these days, but they are not a new phenomenon. This bag, in the form of a box with shoulder strap, was designed to hold cartridges for a pistol. Although this bag is a functional object, rather than a fashion accessory, its elaborate decoration with red lacquer and gilding indicates that it was used ceremonially.
