Two identical models of two-wheeled carts for shipwreck rescue operations on the beach.
The wheels are placed in the middle and have seven double spokes on which scoops are mounted, which can move up and down. The wheels are driven by means of a gear train, mounted in a frame in the middle of the cart, working at a ratio of 8/45 in reverse; how this gear train was used exactly, is unclear. The bottom of the carts is very low and has two layers, the space between which is probably filled with a buoyant material such as cork. The upper sides have benches. The parts are joined in such a way that the entire cart can be disassembled quickly.
Although Obreen only mentions one model,1 two were found (NG-MC-846-1 and NG-MC-846-2). Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) probably designed these carts as an improvement of the life-saving apparatus of Sidney Smith (NG-MC-847-1 and NG-MC-847-2).
