Model of a Javanese marketplace, anonymous, c. 1830 - c. 1860

modelmaking, More details

No fewer than 154 miniature figures made of bread dough populate this marketplace on Java. Such models were made as souvenirs for Europeans. It includes all of the ingredients that appealed to Western travellers: a tropical market, various population groups, exotic dancers and even a gamelan orchestra. Note the dignitary and his entourage. They are almost identical to the larger-scale painted court officials on view elsewhere in this gallery.
