Deze man werkte in het laboratorium van Philips Data- en Telecommunicatie in Hilversum. Hij stond in de 'Modelshop', dat is de plek waar men bezig was met het ontwerpen van chips voor telecommunicatie-apparatuur. Philips werkte hierbij samen met het grote Amerikaanse bedrijf AT and T. De grootste afnemers van de apparatuur waren vooral grotere bedrijven, waaronder de PTT (nu als TPG, The Post Group, onderdeel van KPN. Chips werden en worden op vele terreinen toegepast, naast telecommunicatie ook vooral in computers. Philips verrichtte veel fundamenteel onderzoek naar het ontwerpen van chips, dit gebeurde in hun Natuurkundig Laboratorium in Eindhoven.
