Funeral of the Moluccan Leader Julius Tamaela, Koen Wessing, 1978
In 1978 Wessing was commissioned to record the customs of diverse population groups living in the Netherlands for the photography commission ‘Other Cultures in the Netherlands’. He photographed celebrations, schools, and the religious customs of Surinamese people, Chinese, Turks, Moroccans, and Moluccans, among others. Here we see the state funeral of a Moluccan leader set against the snowy white decor of the Dutch winter.
