In the 1880s, shallow straw hats based on boaters, were all the rage. It was fashionable to wear these on a big bouffant hairstyle. When they first appeared, well-to-do women would wear them for archery or when playing tennis. They soon caught on, since women of all classes could afford these relatively cheap hats for everyday wear and for going out.
