Gropius hired sculptor Gerhard Marcks as master of the Bauhaus ceramics workshop in 1919. Following his appointment, he learned how to make woodcuts from Feininger. Die Katzen is one of Marcks’ first efforts in this technique. In this stealthy hunt, he successfully achieves convincing three-dimensionality and exciting liveliness through the composition of beams and lines.
