The subject of this heavily discolored drawing is uncommon within the oeuvres of Valentijn Klotz (c. 1646-1721), Barend Klotz (?-?) and Josua de Grave (1643-1712), all of whom rarely drew landscapes without figures or buildings. It appears that an initial brown ink drawing featuring rocks and shrubberies was left unfinished and a later hand added the grey ink and washes.
