Powder flasks not only served a practical purpose but also functioned as accessories that were produced with a great deal of care. This example has been crafted from the shell of a tortoise, a material that overseas trade made available in the Netherlands from the 17th century. On the copper mount is an illegible escutcheon topped by an earl’s coronet.
