Sample of cast iron, with one rough side, and two opposed curved sides, the one convex and the other concave.
The identification of this particular sample as number 957 on the inventory list, is based on probability only. According to Obreen’s catalogue, number 957 was a sample of cast iron that De Fremery presented to the Navy Model Room in February 1859.2 It was taken from a 60-pounder gun, which was cast by Krupp for the Dutch Navy but rejected because of a small error at the trunnions.
