Bronze ship bell with iron clapper and suspension axle.
Bells of this type were designed for pilot vessels, and the inscription ‘LW’ on the bell refers to the pilot service (‘Loodswezen’). By Royal decree number 54 of 12 June 1858, all sailing ships were ordered to carry such a bell, to be sounded when sailing in fog on a starboard tack.1
