Model of a long 24-pounder breech-loading gun.
The gun is 34.25 cm long, its calibre is 14 mm. The breech can be opened by removing a transverse wedge, after which the breech block, consisting of a button and the bottom of the chamber, can be pulled out of the barrel. The carriage is missing.
F.H. Ampt proposed this breech loading gun on 2 June 1829, when he handed over this model and a brass cartridge (NG-MC-716). The design had the additional advantage of requiring only a small round gun port (NG-MC-783). The artillery specialists, amongst them W.H. Sesseler, judged the breech loading system as too weak and the breech block as too heavy, which would slow down loading.
