Wooden model of two consecutive dry docks, with the building for the steam pumps next to the first dock, mounted on a rectangular wooden base.
The entrance has six rabbets for the open-frame model of the double-keeled caisson. The second dock is closed with lock gates. Part of the roofing of the pump house is removable. The entire dock and all the buildings have pile foundations.
The dry dock at Hellevoetsluis was built by Jan Blanken Jansz (1755-1838) between 1798 and 1802 and equipped with a Boulton & Watt steam engine. The construction of this model was ordered by Blanken and it was donated to the Navy Model Room by Dockyard Superintendent Antonie Roepel in 1842, who had received the model from his friend Blanken as a present in 1837.2
A model of the pumping house is in the collection of the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam.3 Two drawings in the collection of the Rijksmuseum show this dock’s pump house (NG-996) and how a ship is docked here respectively (NG-997).
Scale (derived) 1:50.
