Model of a ship’s galley on a deck fitted between the riding bitts.
The part of the deck on which the galley stands is sheathed in brass. Part of the upper deck, which is penetrated by the chimney, is indicated with three planks on two posts running straight through the cross-beams of the bitts. The galley itself is made of copper and is secured to the standard knees with hooks. Most of the interior surfaces are tinned. It is very detailed and can be taken apart. To the front left a large hearth with a low hot plate with rectangular pans is indicated: it can be adjusted to accommodate five or six pans. To the right, a high section with a hearth beneath, a water cistern, another hearth over the cistern with a hot plate accommodating four saucepans or flat cooking trays are indicated. At both sides a bread oven is positioned. To the back, two hearths with large containers hanging above them are shown.
The model represents a ship’s galley for a 44-gun frigate as ordered in 1836 together with a model of the frigate (NG-MC-665).2 Father and son Kollaard were blacksmiths at the Navy dockyard of Hellevoetsluis and made the model under guidance of the Director of the Navy Model Room, G.A. Tindal.
