Wooden frame model of a ship’s hull, bisected along the longitudinal axis, one half placed over the other one, mounted on a base.
The starboard side is fully lined and panelled inside, while the port side only has lining and planking, revealing the construction of the decks. Seventy-four gun ports are indicated in three tiers. The model has an orlop, lower deck, main deck, closed forecastle and quarterdeck with gangways, and a poop. The latter is only indicated by joints for the beams. The beakhead has not been specified, only the knee of the head. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter with two gun ports and a two-storey taffrail. The quarter galleries have been left off. The sheer is almost flat, two wales and a sheer rail are indicated. The hull is S-bottomed.
This model was made by or under the supervision of Pieter Schuijt Jr (active 1796-1841) in Amsterdam from 1806 to 1809, as an instruction model for the Naval Institute at Fijenoord (Rotterdam), to where it was shipped in 1809. The 90-gun ship Chattam (Chatham), 195 feet long, was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam from 1799 to 1800. In 1809 it was converted to a floating battery and used in the defence of Zeeland during the British attack. In 1814 Chattam was a store ship in Flushing and was sacked by soldiers. It was sold for breaking up in 1823.2
