Wooden construction model of a horse-powered chain dredger.
The covered horse mill, which is situated on the foredeck, drives the belt via a gear-train with a long transmission axle below deck; the gearwork of the dredge is placed aft. A large vertically-placed spoked wheel with a winch and pulleys controls the depth of the dredge. The belt is made of brass links with wooden scoops. The upper part of the dredge surfaces on the aft deck and the mud is led off to a short gully at the back, the height of which can be controlled with a tackle. On the port side a winch with a ratchet and a tackle is attached to the dredge to hold it in the downward position, going over a pulley at the base of the gallows of the wheel that regulates the depth. The horse mill can be driven with a handle.
This model was first mentioned as part of the private collection of Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) in 1807.3 It represents the older dredger type with a long transmission axle used in Dutch harbours from circa 1630 onwards.
