Dutch tricolour with gold and black inscription on both sides. On recto in the lower right-hand corner is a label with the second inscription.
This flag was presented by King William III to the 8-gun paddle wheeler Amsterdam (originally Sindoro, renamed Salak in 1851 and soon after Amsterdam, built by J. Vos in Amsterdam 1850-52, 57.2 metres long, decommissioned in 1872)2 in appreciation of its role in freeing the passage of the Strait of Shimonoseki in Japan in 1864. Taking part in an international expedition, Amsterdam helped to break the opposition of the Prince of Nagato, Lord of Choshu.
