This flag was presented by King William III to the 16-gun screw steamer Djambi (Amsterdam 1858-60, 58 metres long, sold out of service in Simonstown in 1874)2 in appreciation of its role in freeing the passage of the Strait of Shimonoseki in Japan in 1864. Taking part in an international expedition, Djambi helped to break the opposition of the prince of Nagato, Lord of Choshu.
