Wooden ‘bread-and-butter’ style half block model of the port side of a two-masted schooner, mounted on a framed rectangular wooden backboard.
The model features a very sharp clipper bow and a counter stern fitted with a round-blade rudder. The sheer rises forward. The hull is V-shaped. The position of two masts and the bowsprit are shown in a truncated form. The foremast is missing but its outline is still visible.
The most remarkable feature is the partly reinforced planking for sailing in arctic regions at the bow and around the ship at and just below the waterline.
Willem Barents, 24 metres long, was a scientific exploration vessel used for arctic exploration. It made a total of seven expeditions to the Arctic between 1878 and 1884.1
Scale unknown.
