Polychromed model of half a gun turret on a complete pivot, mounted on a square base.
The pivot has twenty-four rollers and a toothed rail on the outside. The turret is turned by a mechanism operated with a handle. The turret has armoured sides, detailed with paint, gratings on top and one floor inside, on which the gun is set on a metal slide. The gun is a model of a 23-cm Armstrong muzzle-loader. The slide has a braking mechanism for the recoil.
At the Werkmanstentoonstelling in The Hague in 1876, Adriaan Rosel obtained a Silver Medal for his models; this model was mentioned. This model represents half of the turret of the ironclad ram ship Prins Hendrik der Nederlanden, 70.14 metres long, the first ironclad ship of the Dutch Navy, built by the Laird Brothers in Birkenhead from 1866 to 1867 to a joint design by Laird and the Dutch engineer Bruno Johannes Tideman (1834-1883). The ship had four 23-cm guns in two turrets and four 12-cm guns. It did not perform well as a sailing ship. After 1876, it served in the Dutch East Indies and took part in the Lombok Expedition of 1894. The ship was decommissioned at Surabaya in 1899 and used as an ammunition depot until at least 1905. Its fate after that date is unknown.1
