Lyske Gais and Lia Duinker are the proud winners of the 2015 Rijksstudio Award. Their winning design and those of the other nine finalists are now on display at the Teekenschool.
Lyske Gais and Lia Duinker are the proud winners of the Rijksmuseum's 2015 Rijksstudio Award. The international jury unanimously chose their design for a book bracelet inspired by Rembrandt's drawings from a total of 892 entries, 318 from outside the Netherlands. As well as the trophy cup and a presentation of their design at the Rijksmuseum's Teekenschool, the duo will receive a cash prize of € 10,000.
Rembrandt's hands and a lion's paw
Fascinated by the way Rembrandt drew hands, Lyske Gais and Lia Duinker designed a book bracelet made up of images of hands, titled Rembrandt's hands and a lion's paw. The pages are strung together to form a chain that fits around the wrist. Bound using a variation on the cross stitching method, the book bracelet's pages feature gilded edges cut to dimensions based on the golden section. It also comes with an index listing the title and object numbers of each hand pictured.
The prizes
The jury, made up of Tony Chambers (editor-in-chief of Wallpaper), Mark van Iterson (global head of Design & Concept at Heineken), Renny Ramakers (creative director of Droog Design), Taco Dibbits (director of collections at the Rijksmuseum), Thomas Marzano (global head of brand communication design at Philips), Thomas Widdershoven (creative director of the Design Academy Eindhoven) and Irma Boom (designer at Irma Boom Office), also chose a second-place winner: Rijksmuseum Preserves by Alexandra Schijf and Birgitta van Langeveld. The Rijksmuseum Preserves are based on seventeenth-century Dutch still lives and are dedicated to preservation, just like the museum itself. Rijksmuseum Preserves are a simple yet innovative symbiosis of history, art and people, reinterpreting exquisite flavours from the past for modern tastes.

Make your own Masterpiece
Make your own Masterpiece is a design competition that was inaugurated on 1 November 2013 in honour of the first anniversary of the Rijksmuseum's Rijksstudio website. Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part and all art forms are accepted (design, autonomous art, applied art, photography, video), provided the piece is inspired by the collection of the Rijksmuseum.
The Rijksstudio Award is made possible by the Rijksstudio Fund/Rijksmuseum Fund.
Rijksstudio was created by Fabrique and Q42 in partnership with Irma Boom Office and made possible thanks to the generous support of the Dutch national culture lottery, BankGiro Loterij.
