SUBMISSION AND SELECTION

What do I need if I’m planning to submit an artwork?
• An artwork inspired by Rembrandt, ready for installation.
• The artwork’s dimensions (including frame, if applicable).
• A short pitch, maximum 200 words.
• Hanging/installation system. If your artwork is selected and intended for hanging and you want it to be displayed in a frame, please ensure it is fitted with the hook(s) and/or hanging system it requires before bringing it in. If you want your artwork to be hung without a frame, please ensure that it is fitted with a hanging system. The artwork must be ready for installation/hanging.
• Photographs of the artwork. As part of the online submission process you will be required to upload at least three photographs, showing the front and back of the artwork (maximum 10 MB per photo).
• An account, created by you on lang-leve-rembrandt.awardsplatform.com.

Can I deliver my artwork in person or by post to the museum for the selection process?
No. Artworks can only be submitted for selection through the online submission process. Any artworks received in any other way will not be eligible for the exhibition in the Rijksmuseum.

Are there any costs involved?
There are no costs involved in submitting the artwork for selection.
Please note, however, that the participant is responsible for payment of any costs incurred for production, packaging, transportation and insurance of the artwork, and that these costs will not be borne or reimbursed by the Rijksmuseum.

When will the selection process take place?
The deadline for submissions is on 31 March 2019. A selection committee will make an initial selection in April 2019. A panel of judges will make the final selection in June 2019.

The timetable is as follows:

  • 1 February: online submission period begins.
  • 31 March: online submission period ends.
  • April: selection committee makes preselection of artworks submitted online.
  • Beginning of May: announcement of preselection.
  • Mid-June: preselected artworks delivered in person to Rijksmuseum for final selection phase by a panel of judges (exact date and time to follow).
  • End of June: announcement of final selection of artworks for display in the exhibition; work commences on setting up the exhibition.
  • 15 July: opening celebrations for the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition.
  • 16-21 September: artworks collected in person from the Rijksmuseum (exact date and time to follow).

Who is on the panel of judges?
The Rijksmuseum will announce the members of the panel of judges in February 2019.

ARTWORK AND EXHIBITION

What types of artwork can I enter for the exhibition?
Most forms of visual art are eligible. Examples include:
- photography
- painting
- installation
- drawing
- embroidery
- sculpture
- print
- textile
- glass
- video
- ceramics

Some forms of artwork are not eligible for participation. Examples include
dance, music, performance, literature, poetry and games.

The work should be ‘inspired by Rembrandt’ – what does that mean exactly?
One precondition for the artwork being selected for inclusion in the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition is that it is inspired by Rembrandt. Your entry could be a modern version of one of his artworks, but other possible forms of inspiration include the way Rembrandt captured light, immortalised his subjects, used colour or applied texture.

MISCELLANEOUS

Are there limits to the dimensions and weight of the artwork?
Yes. The maximum measurements for artworks are: 280 cm (height) x 220 cm (width). Maximum weight: 200 kg. If your artwork is (or approaches) this size and/or weight, please contact the Rijksmuseum; the maximum depth of an artwork depends on its height and width.

Is anyone allowed to enter an artwork?
Yes, but please note that anyone younger than 18 years old must have permission from a parent/guardian.

Can I enter multiple artworks?
No. Each entrant is allowed to submit one artwork – an object may consist of multiple parts, but they must form a single artwork.

Can I enter an artwork if I do not live in the Netherlands?
Yes. Please note that if your artwork is selected for the second selection phase it must be brought to the Rijksmuseum in person – you may choose to have someone other than yourself deliver the artwork in person in your place. Under no circumstances is it permitted to deliver your artwork to the Rijksmuseum using a package delivery service, for example. Any artworks delivered in this way will be refused, and will therefore not be entered for the selection phases.

Can I enter an artwork made together with one or more people?
Yes. Please indicate this in the submission form. Please note that if you enter an artwork made together with other people, you are not permitted to submit any additional artwork that you were involved in making.

Will my artwork become part of the Rijksmuseum collection?
No. Those responsible for all the selected artworks will be able to pick up them up from the Rijksmuseum from 15 to 21 September – you will be approached personally with a specific time and date.

Will I be able to attend the opening? If so, can I bring a guest?
If your artwork is selected for the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition, you will receive an invitation to the opening on 15 July 2019. You will be able to bring along one guest.

If my artwork is selected, can I get free admission to the Rijksmuseum?
If your artwork is selected for the exhibition, you will be issued with a special pass granting free and unlimited admission to the Rijksmuseum for the duration of the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition.

Does the artwork I enter have to be a new one, or can it also be a pre-existing artwork?
As long as the artwork satisfies the conditions, it can be a new or pre-existing one.

Is it permitted to enter an artwork made by someone who has since died?
No. You may only submit an artwork that you made yourself (or that was made by the person you are acting on behalf of, if you are the parent/guardian of the entrant, for example).

If my artwork is a sculpture, should I also provide a base/pedestal/plinth for it?
The Rijksmuseum prefers to use its own bases and cases. If the base is part of the artwork please contact us at langleverembrandt@rijksmuseum.nl.

Is it possible to be present during the selection process?
No. The selection process will take place behind closed doors.

If my artwork is selected for the exhibition, will it be possible for me to come and personally install it in the Rijksmuseum?
No. The exhibition’s curators and designer will decide on the arrangement of the exhibition, and it is crucially important that the entire artwork and any supplementary components are delivered to the Rijksmuseum at the agreed place, time and date.
