How it works

Any number of people can take part in the Rijksmuseum Pub Quiz, plus you’ll need one person to be the quizmaster. He or she hosts the game and has all the questions and answers. Participants can join in individually or in teams, and everyone gets their own answer sheet for each round. There are three rounds, and eight questions in each round. Each round starts with a short introductory video. After the video, the quizmaster shares his or her screen and starts asking the questions. There are three types of question: multiple choice, open, and ‘true or false’. After each round, the contestants all pass on their answers to the quizmaster, who checks them and shares the correct ones. The quizmaster gives an update of the scores so far. At the end of the quiz, the quizmaster announces the winner.

The ready-to-use pub quiz package

The quizmaster is the only person with access to the package that you’ll need to play the pub quiz. The package includes:

  • Questions
  • Answers & explanations
  • Summarised answers for checking
  • Ready-to-print answer sheet for the players
  • Introductory videos (in the Questions PDF and on this webpage).

The quizmaster and all the teams and/or individuals taking part will need to have access to a laptop, tablet or phone that can run a video conferencing app such as Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts or Zoom. Contestants can write their answers on a printout of the answer sheet or notepad, or type them on their smartphone.

Tips and guide for the quizmaster

  • Quizmasters can first share the questions on their screen, and later share the answers and explanations. There are two separate PDF documents: one for the questions, and one for the answers and explanations.
  • The PDF document contains buttons linking to the introductory videos. You can also choose to watch the videos on this webpage.
  • There’s also a document containing summarised answers, so that they can be checked quickly.
  • Some of the questions are open, and only one contestant or team can be awarded the point – that’s the team or contestant who gets closest to the correct answer.
  • The quizmaster awards each contestant (or team) 1 point for each correct answer. In the case of open questions, if no one guesses the correct answer the contestant with the answer closest to the correct one is awarded 1 point.
  • Quizmasters have the option to use a timer, for example a kitchen timer or on a smart phone, to limit the time contestants have to answer each question.
  • Cheating is not allowed, of course. Quizmaster’s should be strict but fair – and come up with an appropriate penalty should the need arise!
  • Make sure you’ve got a nice prize for the winner. For gift ideas, visit the Rijksmuseum Shop.
  • Add an extra dimension to the Rijksmuseum Pub Quiz by asking everyone to dress in historical costume!

Good luck, and have fun! And do let us know what you thought of it! Share it on social media @Rijksmuseum #Rijksmuseumfromhome.
