Interactive and inspiring

The Rijksmuseum app lets you visit the museum in your own way: you can explore area by area, or take a themed tour. During your tour the app will guide you from room to room, and you decide which works you want to hear more about. Every story has multiple layers: an audio clip, an animation that reveals surprising details about the collection, and extra information given by inspiring experts and amateur enthusiasts.

Highlights tour

This tour uses the real gems in the collection to guide you through the ages: the Night Watch, the Milkmaid, the library, the doll’s house or Van Gogh’s self-portrait.

Rembrandt tour

Take a stroll through the life of the most famous Dutch painter using his masterworks as reference points, including the magnificent Night Watch.

Colonial past

There are all kinds of stories hidden behind the collection at the Rijksmuseum. This tour will guide you through twenty objects that show various aspects of the Dutch colonial past.

Music

On the music tour, you will discover paintings with musical subjects, musical instruments and other objects, each accompanied by videos and interviews with musicians who reveal more about these works.

Building

The building that houses the Rijksmuseum conceals some intriguing tales. Uncover the building’s secrets and forever change the way you look at this extraordinary landmark in the city.

Highlights per area

With these tours you do not follow a fixed route, but you can get more information about the highlights of an area in the Rijksmuseum. For this you simply choose an area in the museum and the app shows you the highlights. You can see in the app where the highlights exactly are and how you get there from your current location in the museum.

If you are not following a specific tour, but you do want more information about a specific object that has a number next to it? Just type in the number on the app under Search and discover more about the object.

Practical information and tips

  • Download the app for free from the App Store or Google Play.
  • The tours are also available through a headset that you can obtain in the museum.
  • You can take your own headphones with you or purchase a headset from the Multimedia Desk at the museum.
  • Turn on location and Bluetooth services to take full advantage of all the app’s features.
  • The themed tours take around 90 minutes each.
  • The tours are available in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Mandarin Chinese.
  • You can only play the Family Game with equipment you can hire at the museum. The Family Game is available in Dutch, English, German and French.
  • Temporary tours are developed for special exhibitions.
