Description
Fragment van een allegorie op de tirannie van de hertog van Alva in de Nederlanden. Het deel van de voorstelling uiterst links met de hertog van Alva zittend op zijn troon ontbreekt. In het midden de zeventien Nederlandse provincies met provinciewapens geknield en geboeid in gevangenschap. Links de leden van Alva's Bloedraad, rechts de met stomheid geslagen leden van de Staten-Generaal. Rechts op de voorgrond een groep toeschouwers. Op de achtergrond links de onthoofding van de graven van Egmont en Hoorne te Brussel, mei 1568, en de hertogin van Parma vissend in een vijver. Rechts op de achtergrond martelingen, brandstapels en lijken aan galgen. Gebaseerd op een prent van Willem Delff uit 1622.
