Long before the era of a standard format for money, cards, and documents, men carried small envelope bags like this one to hold all sorts of things. This ‘letter case’ with matching comb belonged to Thomas Hees from the time he was Dutch ambassador to Algiers. His name and position are embroidered in gold thread on the bag.
