The IJ near Amsterdam, Ludolf Bakhuysen, 1673
The IJ in Amsterdam was a bustling hub of activity, where diverse people converged – sailors and other seafarers, traders, ship owners and loaders, as well as relatives bidding farewell to the sailors and street urchins in search of adventure. A man aboard of this ship deftly maneuvers the vessel along the shore with a boat hook, while two other crew members nearby lower the sprit sail.
