When was something a matter of friendship? When was it love or lust? These are portraits of two best friends, painted as pendants – a form usually reserved for married couples. The two women lived together for 30 years and were each other’s sole heirs. Gool died first. Van Citters asked her relatives to bury them side by side and for their portraits to always hang together.
