Portrait of the Artist’s Mother: ‘Iboekoe’, Trubus Soedarsono, 1946
Trubus painted this portrait of his mother in 1946. The expression on her face conveys concern, but perhaps also hope for the future of the young Republic of Indonesia. Her name is Mbah Putri Wates or Mbah Podho. At the lower right, Soedarsono wrote ‘Iboekoe,’ meaning ‘my mother.’ Pinned on the lapel of her kebaya is a little red and white flag, a sign of solidarity with and dedication to the independent Republic of Indonesia.
