Portrait of Magdalena de Cuyper, Jacques Jordaens, c. 1635 - c. 1636
Magdalena de Cuyper is portrayed as a widow, with a black cap, a prayer book, and a flowering tulip. The latter two objects symbolize her piety, and transience. She and her husband had a successful silk cloth business, which Magdalena continued to run after his death. The style of her portrait is the same as that of those of her son and daughter-in-law. After her death, they hung the portrait along with theirs.
