Two Ladies Examining a Little Painting, Alexander Hugo Bakker Korff, 1866
This meticulously painted scene of old maids in a humorous situation is typical of Bakker Korff. The viewer’s imagination is pricked. Are the two women actually examining a work of art, or are they coming to the realization while looking at their reflection in a mirror that they are no longer as pretty as a picture? Given the stuffy interior in which the ladies sit, the latter seems more likely.
