Hilly Landscape with a High Road, Adriaen van de Velde, 1660 - 1672
In the 1660s Van de Velde worked every now and then with the somewhat older Haarlem painter Jan Wijnants. Van de Velde would paint the human figures and cattle in Wijnants’ landscapes. Here he has imitated such a landscape by Wijnants: a fairly bare hilly landscape with a scattering of trees, populated by tiny human figures and scores of sheep and cows.
